Free Retro Text Editor

Put the focus solely on your writing with this retro inspired text editor. Based on the look of word processors from early days of computers, Blinky will ensure your attention doesn't stray.

Detailed Aesthetic

At it's core, Blinky is just a stripped down word processor with minimal features for actual word processing. What it does have, however, is a very detailed retro aesthetic that recreates the look of an 1970/80s word processor program. Completely with things like screen curvature, flicker, scan lines, monochrome visuals, and more. The visuals can be tweaked. Too much screen flicker? turn it down a bit in the settings. There is a choice of twelve vintage fonts, a number of sound effects, and you can even use images to generate text art. It's not all retro, however. Blinky will auto-save your work so you don't need to worry about losing it like you would on real vintage word processor.

Novel but Impractical

Blinky is a great app for feeling a little nostalgic, but it's not very practical for actual word processing. There are no options for formatting or editing, and old school word processors were just not that easy to use. Still, it's free so why not give it a try. Just for the memories.

PROS

  • Twelve different retro fonts
  • Generate text art from images
  • Fullscreen mode
  • Auto-save functionality

CONS

  • No options for formatting text
  • No support for code syntax
  • Does not have hardware "profiles" of real word processors
  • No editing functionality
